As Simi Valley and Moorpark grew in affluence and Tiger Woods sparked greater interest in golf, the region became a haven for the sport, with new courses dotting the scenic, hilly terrain.
While neighboring Thousand Oaks rejected plans for a golf course because of environmental concerns, Simi Valley and Moorpark have welcomed a number of new courses with amenities that have drawn celebrities like Will Smith and Justin Timberlake to play here.
"I've been a golfer since I was a kid, and I would have never thought of going out to Simi Valley and Moorpark to play golf in the past," said Bob Wilson, 67, Thousand Oaks former mayor. "Now I look forward to it. Some of these golf courses are magnificent. ... They are all challenging, and, for the good golfer, they are a joy to play."
Wilson and others said the area is now saturated with courses, which is a boon to golfers, who are finding bargains and discounts at even the best courses.
