A week before the show, I received a phone call from a representative selling tickets to a Touch of Magic Productions fundraiser that would be held at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza on Monday, June 9th, 2003. The show, dubbed Believe in Dreams "2003", is an Anti-Drugs, Anti-Gang Show that Touch of Magic Productions has been delivering for the last 10 years. I decided to purchase 6 tickets for $35, not knowing how many people in the family would be attending (4 tickets cost $25). Since I never heard of the show, or about Touch of Magic Productions, I had no idea what to expect.
The show featured Master Illusionists Richard Burr & Josette performing numerous magical acts that fascinated the audience, children and adults alike. Some of the acts performed, pictures of which you can view on their website, included "Stretcher", "Interlude" and "Origami". Richard also spoke of the dangers of drugs and gangs, getting the audience, especially the children, to shout phrases such as "No, Thank You!" the answer all children should give when asked to do drugs.
Special guests Yonkany & Anabel delivered an impressive magical performance geared mostly toward children with their ability to turn paper napkins and other lifeless objects into live animals. My daughter's favorite moment in the show came when the magician stunned the audience by turning one such object into a little brown puppy dog – she still likes to talk about that every day.
Ivan Pecel, the world juggling champion, was simply amazing – his juggling ability combined with his humorous jokes throughout his entire repertoire made the audience burst into laughter. Children were especially awed when Ivan started juggling 2 ping-pong balls with his mouth. Congratulations to Ivan for receiving his college degree, another successful proof that when you believe in your dreams, you can achieve anything you desire.
The show was definitely worth attending. Knowing that the proceeds would help a worthy cause only made it that much better.
