President Ronald Reagan was honored with a 37-cent commemorative Feb. 9, less than a year after his death.
The U.S. Postal Service usually waits at least one year to honor a former president after his death, but occasionally will waive the unwritten rule. The issue date is three days after the anniversary of his birth Feb. 6, 1911, in Tampico, Ill. Reagan died June 5 at his home in Bel Air, Calif.
Postmaster General John E. Potter has noted that Reagan, onetime baseball announcer and actor, was known as the "Great Communicator" for his wit, delivery and letter-writing. Potter said the nation's 40th president hand-wrote and mailed more than 10,000 letters during his lifetime.
First-day ceremonies were at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, Calif.
